BACKGROUND

Lim Boon Keng was born in 1869, a Peranakan educated in Raffles institution. He won the first Chinese Queen’s scholarship established by Clement Siuitu in 1893. Lim Boon Keng went to Edinburgn to study medicine and returned to Singapore in 1893. His first wife which he wanted to married in 1896 gave him 4 sons but died in 1905. Lim Boon Keng renamed in 1900 and had another daughter and son. Also, he became the director of companies manufacturing rubber and and thus used in World War 1.
In 1912, he founded Knomingtang, Singapore Branch. In 1918, he was awarded the Order of Britain Empire for no services. 1924, World War 2, he was 73 years old but was forced to be the Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Association (OCA). Lim Boon Keng was designated to serve the needs of local Chinese community. Lim Boon Keng passed away at the age of 89 in 1957.
-Lim Boon Keng became a member of the Legisiative Council from 1895 to 1902. He was the main spokesman for the Babas and in 1869, he headed a commosion of enquiry into sources of poverty in Singapore. He was also the Justice of Peace and a member of Chinese Advisory Brand.
-Lim Boon Keng founded Philomotic Society in 1897 and published first straits Chinese Magazine. In addition, he was also against the wearing of pigtail among the Chinese men.
-Lim Boon Keng co-founded Singapore Chinese girl’s school with song ong qiang to educated women as they were not encouraged to be educated.
-He had opium banned, forming auto opium society. However, it was not banned until 1943 under Japanese occupation.
-OAC was firstly locally owned insurance company setup in Singapore. Later, he became the second president of Xiamen University.


CONTRIBUTION

-Promoted Chinese language and Confucianism.
-he learnt Chinese and launched a ‘Speak Chinese Campaign (more people started speaking Chinese)
-co-founded Singapore Chinese girl’s School. (Women were educated)
-raised funds for King Edward V11 medical school. (Doctors were trained and have better medical skills)
-encouraged them to master English. (People improved in English)
-Co-founder of Straits Chinese Association. (Economy booted)
-visited China often and help Chinese officials attract investments from china in SEA. (Good Relationship between East and West)
